You would no doubt be boiling out any remaining salt or peroxide. I’ve seen articles that used vinegar to induce the rust also. I don’t know if it matters how you make it rust . You just need a thin consistent layer.

It is the exposure to the boiling water that converts the rust to Fe3O4, which is the "blue" finish. I have not had the widely varying results mentioned here.
