Only once to Assisi (we drove from Orvieto and spent 3 days there) and loved it also. There is a nice view from the plains looking up at the city, but the city itself is so-so, although there are the remnants of a castle just to the side of it. Then you can either wait for the shuttle bus to take you to the Duomo (the center of everything in Orvieto) or you can walk it in about 15 minutes (or a short taxi ride).
